We’re proud to say that we’re investing in the future with cutting-edge technology at Unity Group – with a major investment in the latest Stuga technology. Recently installed and now running at full capacity, Stuga’s ZX5 Sawing & Machining Center has had a significant impact already, enabling us to increase production by 50% with its precision capabilities.
Our MD, Graham Hughes, has had this to say about the investment and how the equipment is already enhancing manufacturing processes.
Please can you can tell us more about why you’ve chosen to invest in this new equipment?
What are its key features?
One of the key features of the Stuga ZX5 is that it enables increased throughput thanks to the separate machining and sawing centres. This effectively means that both operations can take place simultaneously and significantly boosts the processing speed.
How has it improved production?
We can now cut all of our daily requirements on a single shift with time to spare, whereas previously we would need to run two shifts to meet our needs.
Has it made a significant difference to the team?
In all honesty in the beginning there was a little apprehension. Because the processes of machining and sawing are separate it took operators a little time to get used to how fast the profile is processed. They soon rose to the challenge however, and have been able to keep the machine running at its optimum output.
What’s next? Are there plans for future investment?
In the last 18 months we’ve invested more than £600,000 in new plant and equipment, including a new twin bed vacuum forming machine, to process PVC door skins, a new SCM M100 double bed CNC machining centre, new lifting and handling equipment, plus a new packaging machine.
Graham highlights how Unity Group is focused on the future
To ensure we continue to deliver excellent service and quality, we’ll be looking to invest further, so we can increase our output and improve efficiencies. So far we’ve talked about investing in a new sawing centre for manufacturing timber subframes, an additional press for manufacturing door slabs in order to enhance production and further investments in handling equipment.
Why Stuga versus other suppliers?
As a business, the Newent team has worked with Stuga for many years, having originally invested in a Microline machining and sawing centre back in 2008. Since we acquired the business back in February 2020 Stuga has been invaluable in providing great support, making improvements to the existing machine which has allowed us to produce the products we needed with the desired throughput and accuracy, until the new machine was installed.
Additionally we were able to run both machines in parallel while the new machine was commissioned. All of which meant we didn’t lose any capacity during the transition from old to new.
Finally, as Made In Britain members and a British manufacturer, we wanted to invest in a British company. As a business we feel it’s important to support other UK businesses, particularly a company such as Stuga with such a prestigious and revered heritage – developing and producing quality machines for the UK market and beyond for almost 40 years.

Unity Group & Stuga a Unified Ethos
Stuga design philosophy utilises innovation to simplify problems together with the latest technology. This philosophy includes making potentially complex machinery intuitively easy to use, thereby reducing operator skills and subsequent potential errors.
As a business, our ethos is one driven by development and improvement. Our investment in this new equipment underlines this and represents a significant investment in our manufacturing capabilities and ultimately enables us to ensure we deliver a premium and timely service. With so many doors in production on a weekly basis this investment is a very much welcome addition to the factory.
Unity Group committed to innovation & technology
In addition to new machinery, Unity Group has also invested in a brand new website. As well as a dedicated 24/7 Door Designer which allows customers to create and order their composite doors, it also features an insightful blog, and behind the scenes videos of both Unity Doors and the JCK workshop. Viewers can actually see the new Stuga machine in action.
Committed to developing further and creating a stimulating and motivating environment for employees and clients alike, Unity is excited to see the future unfold.
